The American Wigeon, also known as the Baldpate, are common birds, both in captivity and in the wild. Wigeons are found throughout North America, breeding from Alaska south to Colorado and Nebraska. They spend winters along the Pacific coast east to Florida, and south through Mexico and the West Indies. The males are called baldpates because of the white forehead and crown. The rest of the head is mottled gray, brown and black, with a broad metallic green stripe that runs from the eye to the back of the head and neck. The rest of the body is brownish-buff overall, with a white belly and black tail. There is a white patch on the wing and the speculum is green. The hen is similar to the European species, but has a lighter head. Both sexes have short, bluish-gray bills with a black tip.
