Waterfowl Identification

Waterfowl are most commonly known as ducks. However, other species such as geese, are also considered waterfowl.
Ducks are feathered animals which in most species are shed twice anually.
They have webbed feet, and a bill for gathering food. They beay their
young from eggs and make their nests on the ground. Nearly all males
lose their bright plumage after mating.
Ducks are migratory and have seasonaly cycles:
- Nesting in the spring
- Raising young in summer
- Migrating south in fall
- Return back to nesting site in spring
To identify a given species, look for charicteristics such as:
- Habitat
- Flock formation
- Plumage coloration
- Physical shape
- Voice
- In-flight wing noise
Each species has traits which set them apart from others.
waterfowl are seperated into three categories:
- Puddle Ducks
- Diving Ducks
- Geese
